So your new website seems to fall into a competitive niche and you’re having trouble getting visitors. It can take years to become ‘popular’ in certain niches, even if you have excellent SEO skills. Let’s take a look at why getting involved in the social media scene could really surprise you.

1. Quick Results
It can take a while for your article to be picked up by search engines, and even longer to perfect the SEO so people will find it. That same content can be written, sent out (posted) to your social network accounts, and be seen by thousands of people the very same day.

2. No Cost
Marketing your website with social media will only cost you time and effort. Most small businesses are on a really small budget when it comes to marketing their site. Social media is free and can bring in lots of traffic immediately.

3. Building Links
Visitors who come to your site and enjoy your content can post the link to your article on other social networking sites. Over time, if your content is worthy, this can increase your search rankings tremendously… and you didn’t even purchase an advertising plan.

As i was not too long ago, you may not enjoy all the talk about Facebook, Twitter, or Digg, but I’m here to tell you that this social media market can be very very helpful when marketing on a small budget.

It’s so much more fun! Big companies are so picky and think they know everything. Haha, ok but really I enjoy showing my clients the things possible when building a site now-a-days. Google analytics usually blows their mind! SEO is always a new term and I enjoy explaining that to them and discussing the possible solutions to attract the most traffic to the site. I see so many sites with absolutely zero SEO because people just don’t know what it implement it and how important it is. Aside from showing them all the toys and tricks, I get to watch everything grow! Increases in traffic, new content going up, items selling… that’s the real exciting part.

For most of my clients, it’s the very beginning of their online experience. They’ve never had a website and they’re not familiar with with the possibilities of what a professional website can do for their business. It’s my job to show them. Honestly, the traffic is usually the main concern for most clients and when the numbers start rising it gets very exciting. I make sure all of my clients can access the analytics stats and see for themselves what their visitors are doing and what content is the most popular.

So… if you’re looking for a very personable experience with your web designer, I’ll be happy to work with you! I’m not expensive and I always provide support well after the site is completed; there’s always something that needs to be tweaked. If you haven’t already looked, go check out my portfolio and then contact me so we can get started on your website.

The sites I build are usually with Wordpress or Joomla and are very easy to update. I really want to move into this niche of maintaining websites rather than just building them, or maybe both for my clients. It does take some time to update your website and that could be hard if you’re running a business and taking care of family life simultaneously. Still I would love to see updates and I don’t mind doing them myself; all we need is a little communication.

I have two clients now that send me articles and images weekly, relying on me to upload and format them to fit the theme of the website. Sometimes the clients themselves will add content and I’ll go in afterward and format everything to keep in consistent. I charge them a small weekly fee and they have nothing to worry bout except taking a picture and writing a short article about it.

If you’re interested in having your current website maintained, updated, revamped, or simply want to know my opinion on what things I would change, send me an email.

I’ve just built DublinMarket.net. It’s a spin off of Craigslist.org for local Dublin, GA. I purchased the theme and entire plugins from ClassiPress and I must admit they have quite a remarkable product for sale. Out-of-the box it works very well with only a few issues;

there’s no warning if users try uploading images above the maximum size
(if images are too big, your ad simply posts with no images)

if you’re registered you can ‘manage’ your ads, but there’s not an option to add/remove photos once you’ve posted your ad (found a fix for this with some .php editing)

Overall the package works exactly like craigslist with the exception of non-members being able to edit their posts after the fact. You can set the number of days the ads run, charge for posting if you want, and even allow members to create a small profile with a picture and personal info.

As of now DublinMarket.net is using the default style (CSS) but soon I plan to jump into the design world again and create something unique. If you know your way around HTML & CSS you could truly build a masterpiece with Wordpress’ framework behind this script!

Have you ever gone to a website (your own site maybe?) that has several small thumbnails but they take forever to load? It’s because people insert an image into the paragraph/article and then resize it to fit their needs by adjusting the pixel width/height in the code. Wrong method buddy! What you’re doing is taking a huge image (let’s say 750×380px) and sizing it down to a thumbnail (45×27px). Yes, the page will show the thumbnail sized image now but it’s loading the entire 750×380px image and eating up your bandwidth!

When you need a thumbnail that links to a bigger image, you should create a separate thumbnail image apart from the full-size image that will appear in the full article layout. Using Photoshop is the easiest way to do this because it does two things, retains the image’s ratio when you re-size & maintains excellent image quality. I’m sure you’ve seen those really grainy or pixelated images when people stretch them out or re-size them down way too much.

(Not familiar with image optimization or photoshop? Let us help)

From the beginning of my website building journey I’ve been interested in design & layout the most. Although I’ve never felt adequate at designing in photoshop exactly what I had in mind I’ve always ended up with satisfactory results. I’ve build sites from scratch for clients, edited the design they already had, and even used templates in more recent cases.

My point is that designing a website from start to finish is a big task and frankly I’m ready to focus on more beneficial elements of a website; such as SEO & worthy content. Some of the worst looking sites I’ve seen had some of the most useful and entertaining content I’ve found on specific topics.

My biggest pet peeve after building a website for a client is to see it sit and rot. It just plain pisses me off really. The design is fresh but the content is weeks or even months old! So I’m switching gears from site design to site maintenance. I will still do some design work as that’s part of updating in a lot of cases but my primary focus will be writing good content, making use of SEO elements, and a few other overlooked yet important aspects.

If your site is sitting still and you’d like to get loyal visitors back, let me help update your site on a daily/weekly basis with your direction. It doesn’t take much change to keep people coming back to see what’s new.
